Bill Browder is a financier, author, and human-rights campaigner who has become one of Vladimir Putin’s most determined enemies. Once a major foreign investor in Russia, Browder made his fortune through Hermitage Capital Management, a fund that exposed corruption inside Russian companies. His break with the Kremlin came after his lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, uncovered a massive fraud involving Russian officials, was arrested, and died in a Moscow prison in 2009. Browder then devoted himself to seeking justice for Magnitsky and fighting corruption in Putin’s Russia. His campaign led to the Magnitsky Act, which allows governments to sanction corrupt officials and human-rights abusers. For this reason, Browder is often described as a man Putin deeply resents: a former insider who turned the tools of Western law against the hidden wealth and abuses of the Russian state.
